Vasto-Tremiti

Vasto discovered its tourist vocation: besides the progressive development of its beaches, Roman-era thermal baths, mosaics, cisterns and remains of an amphitheatre were found and restored. Vasto is also the home of Harvard University's Summer Program in Abruzzo, an intensive Italian language program for Harvard students. There are many boats that operate during the summer season to offer a tour of the islands to tourists, who thus can admire the beauty of these coasts.

Tremiti Islands archipelago consists of five islands: San Nicola, San Domino, Caprara, the Cretaccio and the farthest Pianosa. It is easily reached from the main coastal neighboring via ferries and hydrofoils. San Nicola is the administrative, historical and religious Archipelago and is the City of Tremiti. In the past it was the island's defense, with its high walls and fortifications built on the summit of the island. Among the most important buildings the Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare, founded by the Benedictines of Monte Cassino in 1045.
