Puerto del Rosario Connections and services at the port

Discover Fuerteventura on board ferries to Puerto del Rosario, the capital of the island of Fuerteventura and is part of the province of Las Palmas. The city was founded in the eighteenth century with the name of Puerto de Cabras (which remained until 1956), due to the presence of goats that grazed on its shores.

Thanks to its fortunate location in a natural bay facing the African coast, the port has acquired an increasing importance in the maritime traffic of goods over the centuries. Today, Puerto del Rosario is an important stopover for passenger transport in Fuerteventura and is used for connections with the mainland, in the port of Cadiz, as well as for internal connections with the other Canary Islands. The port also has a dock dedicated to cruise ship traffic.

Ferries from Cadiz to Puerto del Rosario are provided by Naviera Armas, which operates one departure per week throughout the year. The crossing takes about 30 hours.

HERE IS A TIP: the Cadiz ferry stops at all the Canary Islands and is the only direct ferry between Fuerteventura and the mainland. If you have to travel with a vehicle, especially a large one like a van or motorhome, you should book well in advance!

From Puerto del Rosario, Naviera Armas also makes internal connections, direct or with stopovers, with the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma and Lanzarote.

At the boarding pier in Puerto del Rosario there is no terminal and there are no particular services for passengers in transit. However, it is located just 1.5 km from the city center, so you can easily reach all the services you need, such as parking, bars and restaurants, various stores, banks and accommodation.

Puerto del Rosario About Puerto del Rosario

In recent years, Puerto del Rosario has experienced an exponential growth in the number of its inhabitants and, in parallel, a significant increase in the flow of tourists.

Although it is mainly a traffic "passing" to more renowned resorts of Fuerteventura, certainly worth stopping and visiting this small bicentennial city, however, is home to almost half of the entire population of the island.

Strolling through the streets of Puerto del Rosario, you can not fail to notice the many statues, which together constitute an outdoor sculpture park of more than 150 works.

→ In the historic center you will find the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, from which the city derives its present name, and, a few steps away, the house-museum of Miguel de Unamuno, where the writer stayed during his exile in 1924. And if you want to delve into the culture of the island of Fuerteventura, you can visit the Center for Contemporary Art Juan Ismael, which houses the best works of local artists. In recent years, Puerto del Rosario has made significant investments in the tourism sector, focusing on improving facilities and promoting the production and distribution of local gastronomic products, such as handmade gofio, cheese and goat meat.
