Harwich is a small town in Eastern England, on the North Sea. Founded in 1238, the port of Harwich was a naval base with a long maritime and military history. It stands at the confluence of the rivers Stour and Orwell, and historically has been one of the safest English ports.

Today the international port of Harwich, together with the ports of Southampton and Dover, represents an excellent gateway to London and southern England.

The Redoubt Fort was built during the Napoleonic invasions. The origins of the Landguard Fort date back to the Renaissance era, while the Beacon Hill fort was still active during World War 2. Don’t forget to visit the High Lighthouse: today it is dismissed but stands as a monument to the city’s maritime history. Take a pleasant stroll through the city centre, where you can admire the Ha’penny Pier, a traditional wooden pier and nice viewpoint. Stroll through the streets of the old city centre, you can admire characteristic buildings and let yourself be carried away by the lively atmosphere of the many pubs and cafés.

The City of London is about 3 hours by car from the harbour. The Harwich International railway station is only 5 minutes walk from the ferry terminal and there is a bus service serving the harbour. There is a short and long-term parking in the port area.
