Halmstad has a rich history and many fascinating places to visit. The river Nissan flows in the middle of the city and separates the old and new town. Every year, the city attracts many visitors thanks to its warm climate, the long sandy beaches and the numerous activities it offers. That’s the reason why it is known as the “summer city of Sweden”.
The seafront is celebrated for its dunes: the biggest one, Lynga Sanddyn, is probably the tallest in Sweden. If you keep following the coast for 8 kilometres, you arrive in Tylösand, where you can find a lively nightlife and a huge, relaxing beach.
In Halmstad, you can stroll along the main street, the Storgatan, admiring the numerous historic buildings, doing shopping, or tasting the local food in the restaurants. The street links Norre Port, the ancient entrance to the town, and the Halmstad castle, dating back to the 17th century.
Explore the city surroundings! With a 20 minutes drive, you will find the oldest nature reserve in Sweden, Haverdals, where you can hike or cycle along its many trails. If you are travelling with kids, you can bring them to Halmstad Adventure Land, the right place for children and families.
The Halland region, where Halmstad is located, is very popular for those who like to spend their holidays in a camping van. There are many dedicated places with a beautiful view of the sea. One of the most popular campsites is Mellbystrand, and it is only 20 kilometres from the harbour. The endless golden beach, dotted with colourful cottages scattered among the dunes, will be the ideal location for a relaxing holiday for couples or families.
A 2 hour drive will take you to the Store Mosse National Park. Wild swans and common cranes, moose, deer, foxes, and lynx live here. You can spend more than a day in the reserve and camp in one of the dedicated areas or sleep in the park's hostel.
Finally, still driving for 2 hours, you arrive in Gothenburg, a beautiful city with a long history. In Gothenburg you will always find something to do, including events, trendy restaurants, museums and monuments to visit, strolls along the romantic canals and shopping in the many venues.
