Ciutadella de Menorca is located on the west coast of the island of Menorca in the Spanish Balearic archipelago. Formerly the capital, today Ciutadella is the most populous city on the island and one of the two main ones, along with Mahon.

Its foundation dates back to Carthaginian times and, during its millennial history, it has suffered invasions, conquests and, numerous events of destruction. The most important reconstruction, which took place in the 18th century, is what gave it its present conformation.

The old port of Ciutadella, very picturesque and used today as a marina, is located in a natural inlet that protects it from the currents. However, several times a year, it is subject to a strong undertow, which can cause damage to moored boats.

The modern commercial port is located in a detached area to the south of the town and is a key hub for goods and passenger traffic bound for the peninsula and the neighboring island of Mallorca.
