Chania also is called the Venice of the East, the village was built on top of the ancient city of Kydonia, dating back to the Minoan period. The initial name of the town was Cidonia, a Roman colony in 67 B.C., later the Byzantines occupied it and completely fortified its walls. But the fundamental imprint came with the arrival of the Venetians, in 1204, who completely transformed it, making it more protected from attack. Today day, after a succession of battles, the island belongs to Greece.
