Ferries from SC de Tenerife to Agaete are ideal if you are on the Island of Tenerife and wish to make a day trip to discover Gran Canaria! You'll leave early in the morning and reach in just over an hour the northern part of the island, less renowned perhaps than the hot and desert south, but just as rich in natural beauty and quaint villages where getting lost will be just a pleasure!
The historic center of Agaete is located 43 cm above the sea level and ferries are the best way to reach the island. First of all, it is worth taking a tour, even a walk, to Puerto de las Nieves: five minutes away, along the paseo marítimo that lines the cliff, you will find Las Salinas, natural lava stone pools into which sea water pours, equipped and completely free.Visit the historic church of La Concepcion and the town hall, founded in the 19th century and reflecting the architectural style of the time.
Also a short drive from the port is Agaete's most famous natural monument, the Dedo de Dios (Finger of God), a rock formation unfortunately damaged by the tropical Delta storm in 2006, which was shaped like a finger pointing at the sky. The cliff, from which its remains are visible, is still worth a visit, however, because it offers a priceless view of the harbor and town.
For a relaxing break take a dip in the salt flats! the famous natural pools of volcanic origin. Another place not to be missed is the Necrópolis de Maipes, an open-air archaeological park dedicated to the history of the ancient peoples of the Canary Islands. In the rest of the municipality of Agaete, there is no shortage of nature attractions and hiking trails, from trails in the Barranco de Guayedra to the Mirador del Majorero for more experienced hikers. Nature lovers should definitely visit the Tamadaba Natural Park, a protected area with the largest pine forest on the island and an extremely diverse flora. In this area, nature forms irregular coastlines and peaks giving beautiful landscapes. Don’t forget to bring your camera in this adventure!
A few kilometers out of town from Agaete, along the GC-2 highway, you will find some of Gran Canaria's most interesting towns, which preserve the characteristic charm predating the mass tourism of the last century. Among these we mention:
• Gáldar, the ancient aboriginal capital, which has some of the richest archaeological deposits on the island;
• Teror, which has preserved the typical colorful buildings with wooden balconies, original from the 15th century;
• Arucas, with the imposing Church of San Juan Bautista built entirely of local lava stone, whose 60-meter bell tower dominates the square and the valley around the town.
