Pianosa, along with Elba island, Capraia, Giglio, Gorgona, Montecristo and Giannutri are the seven islands that make up the Tuscan archipelago, a true Italian jewel.
The island is known as “the flat island” because of its flat shape with no hills or mountains; it reaches a maximum height of 29 meters. It is nestled in a natural habitat of beauty and is untainted by human hands because until recently it was inaccessible given the presence of the maximum security prison until 1997. Now it is possible to visit it thanks to tour guides who will take you to discover the wonders of the island. The island is part of the municipality of Marina di Campo, and spend the night is allowed only in the small Hotel Milena run by a social cooperative that also provides catering services for visitors to the island.
On the island there are beautiful coves and beaches with crystal clear waters and white sand that will leave you breathless, one example is Cala Giovanna and Cala dei Turchi, where you can snorkel, dive or simply enjoy a day at the beach with your family. The island offers a variety of activities you can do such as kayak tours, guided bus tours, nature trekking, mountain bike tours, visits to the catacombs or a visit to the geological and archaeological science museum.
