Viking Line is a Finnish shipping company based in the city of Mariehamn, in the Aland Islands.
The origins of Viking Line date back to 1959, when several sailors and businessmen from the province of Åland got together and the S/S ferry Viking of the company Vikinglinjen Ab, founded by Captain Gunnar Eklund, crossed the Baltic Sea for the first time.
In the following years, cooperation between the companies Vikinglinjen Ab, Rederi AB Slite, Ålandsfärjan Ab and Oy Viking Line Ab opened a new era of vehicle and passenger transport between mainland Finland, the Åland Islands and Sweden. At first, these new routes were viewed with skepticism, but time has confirmed that it has been an excellent travel opportunity for northern European travelers.
Until now, freight between Sweden and Finland was only transported by land. By sea, transport was expensive, time-consuming and vehicles had difficulty boarding. Viking Line's new shipping lines finally made it possible for goods, vehicles and passengers to travel faster and cheaper.
In 1960, the company moved its destination port to Kapellskär and, in 1963, established a route between Mariehamn and Kapellskär.
In 1970, the company purchased three new ships, designed for the first time to offer ample space for the transport of vehicles and equipped with all the necessary amenities to make the passengers' journey a pleasant one. Viking Line can be considered the forerunner of the cruise-ferry concept, i.e. the combination of a cruise ship and a conventional ferry.
Today, Viking Line ferries take you comfortably to the main Baltic ports in Estonia, Finland, Sweden and the Åland Islands.
